ASSOCIATION FOR SOCIAL HEALTH IN INDIA, HARYANA BRANCH

Association for Social Health in India (formerly known as Association for Moral and Social Hygiene in India) established in the year 1928. It is a Voluntary and Social Organisation aiming at challenging those conditions that lead to exploitation of women and children for anti-social purposes. The Association is registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and is affiliated to the International Abolitionist Fedaration which enjoys consultative status with the United Nations. The Haryana State Branch of the Association for Social Health in India was established in 1968 (functioned in the erstwhile Punjab State since 1958) and is engaged in mobilising public opinion against evils prevalent in the Society such as dowry, bride burning, drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS etc. The main activities can be categorised as preventive, curative, rehabilitative and legislative.

Provision of shelter for Destitute & Orphan children and arranging for their education, vocational training and rehabilitation is one of the Association's main activities.

The Association's project "ASHIANA" in Panchkula, Distt. Ambala, has a capacity to shelter 70 children from the disadvantaged sections of the society. Since its inception in 1982, it has looked after more than 200 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years. As the children reach adolescence, they are transferred to orphanages run by the Govt. of Haryana for further rehabilitations. The Govt. of India through Govt. of Haryana gives a grant-in-aid for the children for minimum needs, but the major portion of the expenses come from our own resources, donations in cash and kind, which enable us to maintain a good standard of living for the children. They receive nutritious diet, standard health care for prevention and treatment of disease, school uniforms, books, games equipment etc. and are never allowed to develop an inferiority complex with their peers in schools. The children do very well in studies and quite a few of them have had high divisions and won scholarships. Our Chief Patron, the Governor of Haryana, visits the Home once a year to encourage and bless the children. The Board of Management is constituted of volunteers.
'Ashiana' means 'Nest', a shelter prepared with tender, loving care where nestlings are fed and cared for by birds till they are able to fly themselves and leave the nest. Our Ashiana is a shelter for destitute and orphan children run by the Association for Social Health in India, Haryana State Branch. This home has been in existence sinmce 1982 and was lodged in rented accomodation. In 1993, the Government of Haryana was pleased to give the Association a piece of land measuring 1000 square meters on concessional rates. It was then that Fund Raising Drive was instituted towards constructing a Home of our own for the chldren. With the generosity of our donors, we have been able to complete the first and second phase of our project and are today the proud owners of a home where we can accomodate 70 children.
